Description
The Colosseum, also known as the Coliseum, is the most
well-known of Rome’s Classical structures, even 2,000 years after
it was built, and despite decades of pillaging for building materials.
Emperor Titus celebrated the opening of the Colosseum with a hundred days
of gladiatorial combat. The games were traditionally visited by Emperors.
The emperor Commodus is said to have performed hundreds of times in the arena.
The Colosseum also featured dramas, reenactments, and even public executions
in addition to the games.
